The family of Tahirou Diallo, a 60-year-old rideshare driver tragically shot and killed by a passenger in North Texas, is calling for justice and urging Uber and other companies to implement stronger safety protocols to protect drivers.
Diallo was killed shortly after midnight on Wednesday while working for Uber. The incident occurred on Mickey Street. According to police, the suspect—a 30-year-old man who has not yet been named—appeared to be highly intoxicated at the time of the shooting.
Remembering a Beloved Community Member
On Thursday, dozens gathered to honor Diallo’s life and legacy. Family members described him as much more than a driver: a father figure, a mentor, and a pillar of his community.
“He was there when I was born. He was there for my naming ceremony and so many moments,” said Jariatou Ngaruko, Diallo’s niece.
“He was someone who truly cared about everyone around him. He was grounded in his faith, in his values, and in always doing good for others.”
A Grieving Family and a Plea for Change
Diallo leaves behind a grieving wife and a 3-year-old son. His family says the pain goes far beyond the moment of violence—it affects generations.
“He won’t get to see his son grow up,” said Ngaruko. “Taking someone’s life in a moment of anger or frustration doesn’t just end one life—it damages many more for years to come.”
The family is not only demanding justice, but also urging rideshare companies to screen passengers more thoroughly, just as they do with drivers.
“Uber does a great job vetting drivers,” said Ibrahima Diallo, Tahirou’s cousin. “But there should be the same kind of vetting for riders. If we could get anything from this tragedy, it would be real safety reform.”
Uber Responds, Police Continue Investigation
Uber issued a public statement following the killing:
“We are deeply saddened by this devastating loss. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the driver’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We are in contact with law enforcement and are supporting the investigation fully.”
The police said that official charges, booking photos, and bail information would not be released until the suspect has appeared before a judge.
